CHK Claim checker

Eight checks. One clear next step.

Answer eight short questions about what you were sold and how. You get back an indicator, the checks that fired and why, where you are against each deadline, and the documents to gather. Nothing is charged, nothing is valued, and you can stop at any point.

Loading the checker

The checker needs JavaScript to run its eight checks and give you a result. Every page of information on this site works without it — the guides and the time-limit tables are readable as plain HTML.

01 Preparation

What you need, and when you need it.

You can start with nothing but your memory. The documents matter when you write to the firm — and most of them can be requested from the firm rather than found.

Nothing in the “to start” column is required.

02 After your result

What to do with the indicator.

  • Put the complaint in writing, and ask for the advice file at the same time
  • Note the date on your letter: the firm must normally respond in writing within 8 weeks
  • Diarise six months from the final response for the Financial Ombudsman Service
  • Check the firm on the FCA Register, and on the FSCS list of failed firms
  • Keep every letter, email and note, including the ones you send
  • Take advice on the court time limits if the sums are large

03 Questions

About the checker.

What does the checker actually tell me?

Which of the eight suitability checks your answers trigger, why each one fired, where you are against the deadlines for each route, the next step, and the documents to gather. It never produces a compensation figure, because a figure needs your full file.

Does it cost anything?

No. The checker is free, we do not charge for it, and we do not take a share of anything you might recover. Complaining to a firm and using the Financial Ombudsman Service are also free.

What happens to my answers?

They are used to produce your result in your own browser. If you give an email address and consent, a one-page summary is sent to that address. If you ask us to, it is passed to Edward & Amaury Solicitors so that we can contact you about your claim. Nothing is passed on unless you tick that box, and the privacy notice states the retention period.

Do I need my documents to start?

No. The first three steps need nothing but what you remember. The documents matter later, when you write to the firm — and asking the firm for the advice file is itself a step the checker will suggest.

Can the checker tell me whether I have a claim?

No, and you should distrust anything that says it can. It gives an indicator based on the answers you give, which is a starting point for a complaint — not advice, and not a prediction.

Is it suitable for a claim on behalf of someone who has died?

You can run it on the facts of the person who died, and the estate can pursue a complaint they had. Both the Ombudsman and FSCS have processes for that. Deadlines do not pause, so take advice early.

Next step

However the checker came out, you can ask a solicitor to look at it.

An indicator is not a decision, and a “cannot assess” answer is not a no. Send us what you have — the product, who sold it to you, roughly when — and Edward & Amaury Solicitors will tell you whether the claim is worth pursuing and what it would involve. Free, in confidence, and with no obligation.
